Lots of Lochs

Lots of Lochs

If somebody says the word “loch” aloud, what does it make you think of? Does it conjure images of spies, hacks and criminals lurking the underworld in Humphrey Bogart raincoats, breaking safes with indecipherable combinations and arcane lock picking techniques? Do you think of a lock of hair, perhaps Alexander Pope’s satirical poem The Rape of the Lock (which has ambiguities of its own)? Or does the word make you crave a journey to Scotland, with its rugged geography, gourmet food and horrendous weather? If you answered ‘yes’ to the last question, then I suggest you get the first flight to Inverness from Gatwick airport and start enjoying Scotland at its finest. Upon landing in Inverness, you may be struck by the size of the town. Arguably the capital of the enormous Scottish Highlands, this small settlement boats a hospital and several fish and chip shops. I would recommend the battered haggis, although it is also worth trying the two black pudding variants – white pudding and red pudding. Leave Inverness and visit the country’s largest loch, Loch Ness, and try to spot Nessie for yourself. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. With return flights starting from around fifty quid, you could be there in no time. Picture yourself tomorrow, haggis in one hand, thermos in the other, trying to spot the arching back of an ancient monster in the depths of Loch Ness. You’ll probably need more than a wee dram of whisky in that Thermos, given the likely weather, but still.
